Marine Biologist
Most scientists in any field of biology, including marine biology, need a doctorate of philosophy (PhD) to work in research and development positions or to hold administrative or leadership positions in research or academic programs. This degree can be specifically geared toward marine biology, or it can be based in biology in general
  • estimate the numbers of marine organisms and analyse their population features
  • observe the structure of communities of marine organisms and work out the factors influencing this structure
  • assess and advise on introduced species - causes, effects, prevention and control
  • provide advice to managers, politicians, primary producers, health care workers and the general public
  • write scientific reports on research and investigations, and more general information for scientific, managerial, political and general audiences
  • provide research training for students and staff seeking entry to this field.
$36,472 - $63,748
The employment outlook in this field is highly competive. The supply of marine scientists far exceeds the demand, and the number of government jobs is limited. Other employers are local governments, aquaria/museums, colleges and universities, and private research laboratories or consulting firms.

Marine geologists are hydrologists who study the earth. What sets them apart from geologists is these scientists study areas of the earth that are under water. Using sonar and acoustic techniques, as well as sensing technology, these individuals map under water lands, locating valleys, canyons, ridges and even volcanoes.
